A Few Gas Stations Are Selling Ethanol-Free Fuel

The newly-reopened Rhoades’ Service Center on Western Avenue in Albany started advertising 100% ethanol-free gasoline on Tuesday.

The gas station is one of a handful in the Capital Region that is offering fuel that doesn’t contain the environmentally-friendly additive.
Station staffer Bob Haines tells us, “We know a lot of people involved with motor sports and using small engines for their businesses (landscapers, snow plowers, and whatnot) and that’s why we went ethanol-free.”
The ethanol that is added to gas is potentially damaging to engines.
A little further down Western Avenue, broken snow blowers fill Matt Rutnik’s shop in the back of Robinson’s Ace Hardware.
Rutnik can fix them but, in some cases, he says they may not be worth fixing.
“Throw away a $400 snow blower and get a new one,” he says.
Rutnik explains that the ethanol added to fuel absorbs moisture and that leads to rust.
He tells us that it’s a potential problem in any engine but it’s a problem that car engines can handle… read on.
