Ethanol Conversion May Be More Than You Bargained For
By Mr Ethanol | November 28, 2008
Question: I’m interested in converting my car to make it run on E85 ethanol. Are there kits to do this, and is it safe?

Answer: There are indeed kits that, when installed, will allow your vehicle to run on E85. There are problems, but there are ways to address them.
First, though, I have to ask: Why do you want to make this conversion? If it is to make a personal statement about cutting back on our dependence on foreign oil, by all means, go for it. But if it is to save money, I’d suggest you think hard, because you likely won’t.
At last look, the local ethanol outlet — the station at the Turkey Lake rest area on Florida’s Turnpike — was selling E85 for $1.69. That’s cheap, sure, but since you can expect to get about 15 percent worse mileage with E85 than gasoline, it’s not cheap enough to make up the cost of the conversion.
