UP To Get Plant That Turns Wood Waste Into Ethanol For Cars

    By Mr Ethanol | October 8, 2008

    Detroit Free Press:
A Boston-based company that will turn wood waste into ethanol for vehicles has received a $26-million grant from the federal government to build a plant in the Upper Peninsula near Sault Ste. Marie, Gov. Jennifer Granholm announced today.

Mascoma Corp. also will receive $23.5 million to develop a plant that eventually will churn out 40 million gallons of ethanol annually, according to company officials.

The grant was announced by the U.S. Department of Energy, said Granholm.

“It’s the next generation of ethanol. It’s really a home run for Michigan,” she said.

The plant will chemically break down wood chips and other cellulose-based waste to produce ethanol for commercial consumption.
