Ethanol Subject Of Consumer Curiosity

Each week, Jay Stoflet gets an e-mail from a motorist wondering when his company is going to build an E85 station in the Fond du Lac.
“With higher gas prices and the availability of more and more flex fuel vehicles on the market, there’s been a lot of consumer interest,” said Stoflet, director of retail for Renew Fuel. “We’re certainly working hard to get one up there.”

So far, Renew Fuel, a chain of retail fuel stations dedicated to alternative fuels, has 16 stations in cities throughout Wisconsin, including Waupun and Mayville. The stations offer E85 — a blend of fuel containing 85 percent ethanol.
While flex fuel vehicles that can run on E85 have been on the market since the late 1990s, Stoflet said more manufacturers were adding models to their lines to meet customer demand.
Tom Hodge of Waupun has been driving a flex fuel vehicle since 2005. With the spike in gas prices, Hodge said he has elected to fuel his vehicle solely with E85.
“On the average, I lose about 3 to 5 mpg, but as long as there is a 60 cent price difference between E85 and regular gasoline, it pays for me to run E85,” Hodge said.
While lawmakers killed a bill requiring all regular grade gasoline sold in Wisconsin to contain 10 percent ethanol, a federal mandate for renewable fuel standards signed into law last year has resulted in nearly 85 percent of regular grade gasoline being blended with 10 percent ethanol.
