    Ethanol Firms Seek More Clarity

    By Mr Ethanol | June 9, 2008

    Bangkok Post:
Ethanol producers are demanding clearer policies, better tax incentives and regulatory changes that will allow them to sell their output to industries other than energy and fuel producers. Members of the Thai Ethanol Manufacturing Association met yesterday with Industry Minister Suwit Khunkitti to press their case and seek clarification about the the government’s plans for E85 fuel.

Members needed a clearer understanding of the government’s E85 policies in order to prepare promptly for future demand, said Maj Verawoot Vatjanapukka, a member of the association’s executive committee.

”If the government is serious about pushing for more use of E85 and if automobile manufacturers are joining the scheme, as ethanol producers, we will also have to adjust to structural changes in ethanol demand,” Maj Verawoot said.

The government has vowed to make E85 fuel, a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline, available by October, three years ahead of schedule. Currently there are no E85-compatible cars available locally with the exception of an imported Volvo model.

The association also complained about the current tax treatment of ethanol. Jetsada Wongwatanasin, managing director of Thai Sugar Ethanol Co Ltd, said the government had promised that it would not tax ethanol used for fuel.

He said the government kept its promise with respect to E10 premium gasohol, which carries a tax of 3.30 baht a litre, reflecting its 10% ethanol content, against 3.60 baht for premium gasoline. More.
