Farm Groups: It’s Not Ethanol
By Mr Ethanol | May 31, 2008
Capital Press:
Farmers want Americans to know they - and increasing production of ethanol - are not causing higher food prices.
Leaders of 5 national farm organizations and the Renewable Fuels Association took that message to the press via teleconference May 28. The whole question of food versus fuel is creating angst in many areas of the nation, and around the globe, said Bob Dinneen, president of the Renewable Fuels Association.

“There are many causes of increased food prices around the globe,” Dinneen said. “Demand and speculation in the marketplace are affecting all commodities. The most important factor is $130 per barrel oil. That’s clearly having a devastating impact on the nation’s economy, and driving inflation across the world. Our opponents say while that may be true, the only thing we can do anything about is the ethanol program.”
Dinneen said ethanol is actually keeping fuel prices 15 percent lower than they would be otherwise.
“Were it not for renewable fuel blends, we’d be paying 30 to 40 cents a gallon more for gasoline and diesel than we are now,” he said. “There isn’t enough liquid fuel available to make up the difference if all ethanol production was stopped right now.”
Tom Buis, president of the National Farmers Union, said ethanol has been blamed for all sorts of problems related to higher food prices including riots in Mexico over tortilla prices and riots in Italy about pasta prices.
“One of my favorites was a front page article in the Washington Post about a store owner’s raising his bagel prices by 15 cents, to over a dollar,” Buis said. “He blamed corn prices.”

Here in Nova Scotia, Canada the gas per litre is
$1.38.7. There are a lot of people here probably wouldn’t think twice about fueling up with ethanol or a mix. Great article, I would like to
use it on my Blog if you don’t mind and provide
your link.
