Ethanol Operator Fittipaldi To Drive E85 Indy Pace Car

When Emerson Fittipaldi received the invitation to drive the pace car for the Indianapolis 500 this year, it made sense for 3 reasons. First was IMS itself. Then there was Chevrolet and ethanol. Fittipaldi is a 2-time 500 winner using Chevrolet power in both wins. He is also an ethanol producer in Brazil and this year the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 pace car will be powered by E85. Emerson is thrilled!
“I’m so happy to be back in Indianapolis after so many years and come to this unique opportunity to show the world how efficient ethanol is with the Chevrolet and General Motors program. The corvette is a beautiful car. The E85 has painted in a special color to show the world about ethanol. I am very happy to be invited by Chevrolet and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to drive the pace car. It is a great honor for me.”
Ethanol in Brazil is made from sugar cane and has grown to nearly 50% of that nation’s fuel supply. Fittipaldi spoke at the GM Ethanol Summit Thursday at IMS and is always anxious to promote ethanol.
“I believe in the ethanol industry. I started 3 years ago to build my own ethanol plant. You know ethanol exists, it is now, it is reality. We don’t depend on other countries in Brazil for fuel. I think it is very important for independence of fuel for the future. It is a green energy. The next generation of people are going to benefit from the work we are doing here, and thanks to people like the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Chevrolet for showing the world that the new energy is here now.”
And I asked the Formula 1 and Indy champion if driving the pace car Sunday might rekindle the desire to race here next year.
“No! I am very happy to drive the pace car as a racing driver, and I enjoyed all my years in Indianapolis. And I am happy to be leading the field and nobody can overtake me this year. I’m happy like that.”
