Ethanol Blend Fuels May Or May Not Affect Your Car

    By Mr Ethanol | May 19, 2008

    NTV:
The ongoing ethanol debate continues as drivers see more fraud at the pump. Besides what paying more for ethanol blend fuels does to your wallet, it might be affecting your car.

It’s less expensive, but ethanol blend fuels aren’t necessarily cheaper quality.

Lon Shroer of Kearney said, “Normally everything with ethanol has a little higher octane rating which is good.”

Area mechanics say E10 fuels, made of 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline, are about the same as regular unleaded gas. That applies to all cars made after the mid-1980s. If you’re driving a classic or maybe a clunker, however, E10 may not be for you.

Dan Cavenee, owner of Central Auto Electric, said, “Some of the early carbonated cars have a
problem with E10 due to discharging dirt and rust in the system. And it will affect any rubber
product in the carburetor or fuel line.”

E85 is another story. The fuels with 85% ethanol and just 15% gasoline are made for flex-fuel vehicles only. The same also goes for fuels labeled E17 and E25. Cavenee said, “That could affect some cars but as far as the new cars with the fuel pump system, doesn’t affect them at all.”

These cars and many trucks are clearly labeled. One car expert said putting E85 in a non-flex fuel vehicle can cause up to $500 damage. A lot more than the pennies saved at the pump.

“You know price has something to do with it, but ethanol really won’t hurt anything,” Shroer said.
