Small Business Bets On Alternative Energy

    By Mr Ethanol | April 11, 2008

    MLive.com:
Perceived demand for energy efficiency and renewable-energy services continues to lure new and existing small businesses in the region.

For instance, 15-year real-estate broker William Snyder plans to open an energy-auditing construction company on May 1 called EnergyChek. Also a developer in southwest Michigan, Snyder has hired six employees and fielded numerous calls already, which he said testifies to the demand for sustainable solutions.

“We’ve structured this company with national or even global (expansion) in mind,” Snyder said. “The biggest complaint of people we talk to is overhead - it’s cash flow, and energy cost seem to be close to the top of the list.”

Snyder purchased proprietary software developed to analyze a residential or commercial building’s energy loss. EnergyChek will use the technology to seal off a structure, create a vacuum, then gather process data through the software and thermal imaging. That data tells the building owner or user, in an itemized fashion, where and how much energy is leaving the structure.

“Sometimes it’s not so obvious,” Snyder said, noting that foundations and roof-wall joints can be a culprit as much as windows and doors.

Then EnergyChek technicians can correct the issues, saving users possibly 30 to 50 percent on energy costs, Snyder said.

The company can serve a 50-mile radius of Kalamazoo, he said, but could merit expansions in-state. After that, he expects to franchise the business nationwide.

Economic development agency Southwest Michigan First in Kalamazoo has agreed to refer business to EnergyChek, and other partners have stepped forward, he said. Full article.
