Biodiesel Leftovers Heat Up Race For Alternatives

With unleaded gas prices topping $3.60 per gallon in U.S. cities, it’s perhaps no surprise that production of biodiesel - an alternative biofuel made from vegetable oil - has more than tripled in the past year.

The problem is what to do with leftovers from biodiesel production like glycerin, an abundant and largely worthless gunk.
In an attempt to make manufacturing biodiesel more efficient (and thus more green), researchers are perfecting ways to turn this waste product into a commodity. It turns out that leftover glycerin can be used to make other types of biofuels, as well as into organic pesticide alternatives. The efforts are sparking interest in the investment community.
