The ‘New Wave’ For Grain Markets
By Mr Ethanol | March 21, 2008
Washington Evening Journal:
The value of the U.S. dollar is declining. Brazil is having a record-setting soybean harvest. China’s soybean purchasing has skyrocketed and has also been suddenly cut short. With all this excitement in the global grain markets, Washington’s Kat’s Grain Inc. is on its toes each day - doing everything it can to keep up with the fluctuating grain prices and give local producers the best prices for their crops.

“Diet Mountain Dew, coffee, iced tea,” said Kat’s Grain Inc. owner Katy Greiner. “I drink caffeine all day long. This market, since October, except for a few hiccups, has done nothing but gone up. It will set back, so that’s what we’re experiencing. I’m hoping that our producers have marketed enough at these levels that, when you have a setback like this, they can just sit back and watch it. Just watch it go low. This market will come back when we have our first weather scare. The demand is here.”
Greiner and her son, John, are grain merchandisers for Kat’s Grain Inc., which buys grains from producers and resells them to area buyers in an attempt to find the best prices for the producers. Katy said the grain markets are rising and falling dramatically for a number of reasons - including high fuel costs, high land values, seasonal weather forecasts, high demand from ethanol producers and other global market conditions.
