Car Makers Go Green At New York Auto Show

    By Mr Ethanol | March 21, 2008

Chevy Equinox fuel cell car runs toward the future.

    MarketWatch:
From the outside, the Chevy Equinox fuel cell vehicle looks a lot like any other sport utility vehicle, but sit behind the wheel, turn the key and the differences abound.

No engine roars to life. Instead, a faint hum comes from the car as its hydrogen tanks feed their fuel into the system for conversion into electricity and water vapor.

Put the pedal to the metal, and the car accelerates much more quickly than a gas-powered car, thanks to the electric motors turning the wheels.

Press the brakes, and a needle on the dash shows electricity, generated by friction, flowing into the car battery.

While General Motors Corp. has yet to release any specific plans to put the Equinox into general production beyond 100 test vehicles on the road this year, the car provides a glimpse of the alternative technologies in prominent display at this year’s New York Auto Show.

Two big hurdles for fuel cell technology - which was used by Apollo astronauts to power the lunar rover - is the lack of infrastructure for hydrogen fuel and the use of increasingly expensive platinum in the components. More.
