Brazilian Ethanol In Africa
By Mr Ethanol | February 27, 2008
After opening representation offices in North America, Europe and Asia, the São Paulo Sugar Cane Agroindustry Union also intends to seek business opportunities for ethanol on the African continent, where there are some Arab countries interested in the commodity.
ANBA:
The actions for promotion of the image of Brazilian ethanol abroad should reach the countries of North Africa up to the end of next year. According to the executive director at the São Paulo Sugar Cane Agroindustry Union (Unica), Eduardo Leão de Souza, one of the targets of the agreement signed yesterday (25) with the Brazilian Export and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil) is the assembly of representation offices that should help in the promotion of the commodity abroad, including in the Arab nations.

Firstly, offices should be opened in Washington, in the United States, Brussels, in Belgium, and in some country in Asia, still to be defined. “It is important to mention that the offices should be located in these cities, but that they are going to operate in other countries. In Euorpe, for example, apart from the European Union, the office is going to operate on the African continent,” stated Souza. And it is in North Africa that Arab countries that have already demonstrated interest in Brazilian ethanol, like Morocco and Sudan, are found.
According to Souza, the idea is for after Unica and Apex-Brasil to identify and analyse the business opportunities in each market after opening the offices. “For ethanol to become a global commodity, it needs to have production spread around the world and in consumer markets,” stated the director, who also recalled that the African continent has a good potential for the plantation of sugarcane. “We are aware of the opportunities in all markets,” he added.
The agreement signed between both organisations forecasts investment of 16.5 million Brazilian reals (US$ 9.7 million) up to the end of 2009 and includes several actions to simplify the offer of Brazilian ethanol, like the organisation of commercial intelligence studies and actions for image and commercial promotion.
