Industry Players Fend Off Biofuel Criticism

EnergyCurrent:
A recent study claiming the global biofuel rush has increased rather than reduced greenhouse gas emissions has attracted mixed responses ranging from support to an outright challenge to the validity of its results from biofuel producers and feedstock suppliers in the United States.
The studies undertaken
by the University of Minnesota and the Nature Conservancy claim the conversion of existing farms from food production to biofuel crops results in an increase in greenhouse gas emissions as food production shifted to other parts of the world bring about destruction of more forests and grasslands. The studies specifically mentioned the cultivation of corn and palm oil trees, which are the two most popular feedstocks for first generation biofuel producers.
Citing commentaries from other biofuel researchers, the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) criticised the studies for adopting ’simplistic and assumption-laden approaches’ to the causes and effects of land use change on greenhouse gas emissions.
NCGA, whose mission is to create and increase opportunities for corn growers, said the scientific community should be discouraged from rushing to judgment to satisfy political time table. “Stakeholders must demand that the best science is brought to bear in this debate,” NCGA President Ron Litterer said. “It is obvious from the lack of agreement on these issues that analyzing the impact of increased biofuels production on domestic and international land use change is a complex process and a relatively new area of study for the scientific community.” Full article.
