American Pilot Aims To Fly Bombardier Aircraft On Biodiesel Fuel

    By Mr Ethanol | February 11, 2008

    AOL Canada:
The oil that cooks your favourite french fries has never flown so far.
A U.S. pilot and entrepreneur wants to fly around the world in a Bombardier (TSX:BBD) business jet fuelled by biodiesel, a product often made with vegetable oil.

Douglas Rodante and his team from the Green Flight project completed the first jet flight fuelled by biodiesel last October in a Soviet-era training jet.

The 39-year-old Czech Aero L-29 Delfin soared 5,100 metres above the Nevada desert for a half-an-hour, with Rodante and chief pilot Carol Sugars at the controls.

Green Flight hopes to launch an eight-stop flight across the United States in the short-range L-29 in a few months, pending the approval of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.

(The Soviet-era training jet was designed with an extremely short range to hinder potential defectors.)

Rodante, a television producer who started flying in the 1990s, is looking further down the runway.

He wants to fly around the world in a Bombardier Learjet running on biodiesel in late 2008 or early 2009.
