Ethanol Lobbies Push For Use Of Richer Blends
By Mr Ethanol | December 6, 2007

International Herald Tribune:
With ethanol production threatening to grow faster than cars and service stations can absorb it, ethanol lobbyists in the United States began a push Wednesday to allow richer blends of the fuel to be used in cars not built for it.
They are asking lawmakers to approve blends of 20 percent to 30 percent ethanol for ordinary cars, up from 10% now. The lobbyists said that such “moderate” blends produced better fuel economy than ordinary gasoline.
But independent experts expressed skepticism, and five senators from states outside the Corn Belt sent a letter to President George W. Bush on Tuesday warning that richer blends could make cars harder to start and less durable.
The ethanol advocates said they had discovered a “sweet spot” at which fuel economy increased, compared with ordinary gasoline, a result they did not expect, since ethanol has only about two-thirds as much energy, gallon per gallon, as gasoline.
“Something about the combination at those percentages makes the car run more efficiently,” said Ron Lamberty, vice president for market development at the American Coalition for Ethanol.
