EPA Sets Ethanol Use Standard For 2008

Environmental regulators on Tuesday set a new renewable fuels standard of nearly 4.7 percent for next year to meet a federal mandate that at least 5.4 billion gallons of ethanol be blended into transportation gasoline in 2008.
The standard for 2007 was slightly more than 4 percent, which amounted to roughly 4.7 billion gallons, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The volume target increases every year until reaching 7.5 billion gallons in 2012.
The 2005 Energy Policy Act requires EPA by Nov. 30 to annually determine the standard, which applies to refiners, importers and blenders of gasoline.
Agribusiness conglomerate Archer-Daniels-Midland Co., the country’s largest ethanol producer, has annual capacity of 1.1 billion gallons and expansion plans to raise that to 1.6 billion gallons by 2009. Other ethanol producers include: VeraSun Energy Corp., Aventine Renewable Energy Holdings Inc., US BioEnergy Corp., Andersons Inc., Pacific Ethanol Inc. and MGP Ingredients Inc.
