Calculate The True Costs Of Ethanol, Then Consider It

There are a lot of alternative fuel producers and government agencies promoting ethanol, but I perceive a less-than-honest disclosure of the real costs and benefits of ethanol.
A recent article (”Ethanol producers look to tap gas pumps,” Oct. 28) indicated that the Southeast U.S. is seen as a potential untapped market for the increasing glut of ethanol. If ethanol was such a wonderfully efficient and economical fuel, it would sell itself. Certainly making the U.S. less dependent on foreign oil suppliers is a worthwhile goal, and to my mind, worth paying a little more for fuel.
One basic issue with ethanol is that it is much more costly than oil-based fuels. Depending on who one listens to, one gallon of ethanol takes more energy to produce than the gallon of ethanol will in turn produce…
