Bio-Fueling The Economy

The price of our dependence on fossil fuels and foreign oil is hitting Massachusetts home heating oil users with a vengeance. As the price of oil on the global market inches closer to an inflation-adjusted record of $1.01, and the price of home heating oil has already hit one. Yesterday it was $3.05 per gallon and rising.
Massachusetts is the third-highest user of home heating oil and pays the third highest price, so it makes sense that we should take the lead in developing bio-fuels that can, among other things, replace some of the foreign oil fueling our furnaces.
The initiative, announced this week by Gov. Deval Patrick, Senate President Therese Murray and House Speaker Sal DiMasi, would make the Bay State the first to require all diesel and home heating fuel sold here to contain a minimum amount of bio-alternatives.
In addition, the measure would make us the first state to offer incentives for the production of cellulosic ethanol, a bio-fuel that is similar to conventional ethanol but uses a more wide-ranging variety of feedstocks and products such as cranberry waste, sawdust and paper pulp. Read on…
