Brazil Braskem: To Build Unit For Polyethylene From Ethanol
By Mr Ethanol | October 30, 2007

CNNMoney:
Brazil’s largest petrochemicals firm, Braskem, will invest $150 million for a plant to produce polyethylene from sugarcane-based ethanol.
The 200,000-tons-a-year-capacity unit is slated to start operations in late 2009, Braskem Chief Executive Jose Carlos Grubisich is quoted as saying in a release. Grubisich spoke at the K 2007 plastics and rubber trade fair in Dusseldorf, Germany.
Braskem in June had announced the production of its first sucarcane-ethanol- based polyethylene in a pilot plant.
The company hopes that ethanol-based plastics will supply the automobile, food packaging, cosmetics and personal care products industries.
Braskem said it has already sent samples of the ethanol-based polyethylene to interested buyers. Resins from ethanol have the same properties and performance of similar nonrenewable ones, Braskem said.
