It Must Be Because Of Ethanol

A common joke between my wife and I refers to ethanol. If the cost of anything seems high or higher than it has been in the past, my wife or I will say, “it must be because of ethanol,” and we both smile.
This is because we hear this from the media as well as our neighbors, who are influenced by the media.
This quote is from Mike Johanns, secretary of agriculture, to a gathering of journalists in July: “If you have reached the conclusion that because food is up 3 percent this year, or 4, or 2 or whatever it is, and it’s because of ethanol, … you’re not telling the full story. And you are not telling an accurate story, in all due respect.”
I am an advocate of increased use of ethanol, but my advocacy is based on facts. Here are some facts the public should be aware of:
» Some aspects of ethanol production are subsidized. Some aspects of oil and gasoline production are also subsidized. Depending on your thinking, ethanol production may no longer need to be subsidized. But a major multinational oil company, based in the United States, has recently had record annual and quarterly profits higher than the world has ever seen. Whether it is good or bad policy, we do subsidize the energy industry. More.
