Ethanol A ‘Major Boondoggle’ - It’s All About Politics And Big Money

    Whec.com:
Dale and Rob Root are fifth generation farmers in Orleans County who make no attempt to stifle their optimism over the soon-to-open ethanol fuel plant in Shelby.

“It’s the best thing for farmers since the invention of the Model-T Ford,” said Dale Root, president of the Orleans County Farm Bureau. “We need this.”

Rob Root says he hasn’t turned a profit with corn in eight years. He says that will likely change when the new ethanol fuel plant opens in Shelby this November. Eventually, ‘Root Brothers Farms’ will send 80% of its annual corn yield to be converted into ethanol fuel at the Shelby facility.

Similar plants are planned for other parts of New York state and others are already up and running in other parts of the country. Advocates say converting corn into ethanol will decrease our reliance on foreign oil while rewarding U.S. farmers at the same time

But a growing chorus of critics are beginning to label the booming corn-to-ethanol industry a sham.

“If I could use a word—it’s a boondoggle,” said Dr. David Pimentel, Professor Emeritus at Cornell University.

Pimentel argues that ethanol is a political solution without scientific evidence to suggest it could ever be a replacement for our reliance on foreign petroleum.
