Cellulose-To-Ethanol Startup Takes First VC Round

An Amherst-based biofuels startup has won its first round of institutional funding to develop a natural bacteria capable of converting cellulose into ethanol.
SunEthanol Inc.’s technology, which is designed to turn biomass such as switchgrass or wood pulp into ethanol, is licensed from the University of Massachusetts, according to company officials.
While the company did not disclose the amount of its Series A round of funding, the list of SunEthanol’s investors includes Waltham-based Battery Ventures and Hadley-based Long River Ventures.
