Intellectual Property And Ethanol: Seven Steps For Success
By Mr Ethanol | August 3, 2007

Ethanol Producer Magazine:
If you thought licensing certain basic processing technology in order to build and operate an ethanol plant would be your only brush with intellectual property (IP), think again. There is likely a patentable gizmo being developed or already in use in every operating ethanol plant. Where there’s a patentable gizmo developed in response to an identified need for speed, efficiency or other production parameters, there is probably money to be made.
Parlaying IP into legal quasi-monopolies, secured debt financing and cash flow is becoming the norm across many industries. For example, in 2003, 90 percent of worldwide corporate net worth was attributed to intangibles and IP.[1] Over $500 billion was expected to be collected in licensing revenues in 2005. Securitizations based on IP have increased dramatically.[2] Clearly, the trend is pervasive and valuable.
