Energy Bill Unlikely To Be Of Much Help

    Wheeling Intelligencer:
The so-called “energy bill” passed by the Senate last week is little more than a piece of feel-good, special interest-driven legislation that will do little to help Americans with the costs of operating their homes and vehicles.

Senators “answer” to high gasoline prices ought to be particularly galling to motorists. A provision in the bill makes it illegal to charge “unconscionably excessive” prices for oil products. We’ll be surprised if anyone in Washington can define the term, much less make it benefit Americans at the pump.

Also in the bill is a mandate that, by 2022, the nation must start producing seven times as much ethanol as it did last year — despite the fact that such an increase will have an adverse impact on food prices, won’t curb pollution from vehicles, and probably will not mean cheaper fuel.

Not to worry, say lawmakers. The bill also mandates a 40 percent increase in the fuel efficiency of cars and trucks sold in the United States, by 2020. Again, realities are ignored: Senators have no answers for questions about how that will affect vehicle prices and safety.

What about coal? Efforts to make it a meaningful part of the energy bill were rejected.

Members of the House of Representatives should scrap the bill and start over.
