Gasoline: Still The Fuel Of Choice
By Mr Ethanol | May 23, 2007

LaSalle News Tribune:
From a practical standpoint from mechanics’ point of view, gasoline remains the fuel of choice.
Sure, gasoline prices were at all-time highs this month, media and environmentalist concern about carbon from gasoline was at a fever pitch and a half-dozen ethanol plants were under construction or consideration in North Central Illinois. But corn-based ethanol is not now and isn’t likely to become the overall answer to the motor fuel problem, according to local wrench users, such as Dave Adrian, Joe Pienta and Diz Demes.
Lifelong La Salle mechanic Adrian returns from pumping gas and collecting cash at the full-service pump and resumes straining against a front tire on a problematic minivan. While adjusting the camber on the suspension, he says, “As a fuel, I think pure gasoline is absolutely wonderful. It’s just that the price is so stinking volatile. … The problem with ethanol, if we were to go to everything ethanol, you’d be paying $10 for a bag of corn chips.”
He noted there are occasional days, such as when gasoline was at $3.40 per gallon and 85% ethanol (E85) was nearly 80 cents cheaper, when E85 is less expensive because of government tax breaks and subsidies. However, gasoline still has a slower burn and far better mileage than ethanol, so “I would say, over time, for cost-effectiveness, gasoline is the best for now.”
Spring Valley motorcycle builder, customizer and mechanic Joe Pienta also says gasoline remains the fuel of choice and will be for quite some time.
