Ethanol Turns All Indy 500 Cars Green
By Mr Ethanol | May 22, 2007

NBC11:
The 33 cars competing in this year’s holiday weekend race will be using 100 percent ethanol in their gas tanks.
“I think it’s a good thing for us to take a step in the right direction,” said driver Danica Patrick. “And I think we are all much more aware these days of what we are doing to the environment.”
Gasoline actually hasn’t been burned during the race since the mid-1960s. Since then, methanol has been the fuel of choice.
But unlike its fossil fuel cousin, ethanol is made from grains like corn. Drivers said it’s a green fuel that improves mileage by 30 percent, which allows for smaller fuel tanks.
“Instead of running 30 gallons you’re running 22, so you have 8 gallons less of weight in the car,” said Jeff Simmons of Team Ethanol.
It’s a change that last year’s winner, Sam Hornish, said is a good statement from a place that’s synonymous with automobile innovation.
